Although, we are a small city of 50 000 people we have some fantastic sports facilities. The facility we are most proud of is our hockey rink on the northside of the river called Willie O’Ree. The rink is actually named after a famous NHL hockey player who was born in Fredericton. Willie Eldon O’Ree was the first black person to play in the NHL. Willie also was blind in one eye, so he was able to beat the odds in more than one way. A ton of people play hockey at the rink and a lot of people gather to enjoy watching the games. No matter where the visiting teams travel from, there is no question they understand who the rink is named in honor of and the huge part of history made by Willie O’Ree.
